TATTERSALLS PRESS RELEASE

HUGE NUMBERS OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS GO IN SEARCH OF TATTERSALLS MILLIONS

Horses ranging in yearling price from 5,000 guineas through to 700,000 guineas remain in the Tattersalls Millions races after this week’s scratchings stage as they bid for the great rewards available in the most extensive sales race series ever staged in the northern hemisphere.

The eight races, all run at Newmarket’s two racecourses, offer total prize money of £1.75 million and are held between 28th August this year and the end of June, 2011. They are open to graduates of Book 1 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

The most valuable race in the series is the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy, open to colts, gelding and fillies, and staged at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course on Saturday, 2nd October. The seven-furlong contest has a massive 353 entries remaining.

Among the least-expensive horses entered are CHILD BRIDE, winner of her only start for trainer Paul Cole, who realised 5,000 guineas in October, while - at the other end of the scale - the 700,000 guineas sale topper, RUDOLF VALENTINO, is also engaged having won a Naas maiden for trainer Aidan O’Brien earlier this month before going on to be third in the Group Three Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh.

Although many of the stars to have passed through last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale have still to show their full potential, some have already made their mark at a high-level this season and remain in the Tattersalls Millions.

Among these are the unbeaten filly MEMORY, a 72,000 guineas yearling, who is ante post favourite for next year’s 1,000 Guineas following her victory in the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket’s Champagne Lanson July Festival.

Jan Vermeer’s three-parts sister TOGETHER won the Group Three Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown last week while other classy fillies engaged include the Richard Hannon-trained DATE WITH DESTINY, George Washington’s only foal, who could bid to win back her 320,000 guineas yearling cost.

Meanwhile, the Luca Cumani-trained KHOR SHEED, an easy winner of the Listed totesport.com Empress Stakes at Newmarket, cost what now looks a bargain 42,000 guineas as a yearling.

APPROVE, winner of the Group Two Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, FORMOSINA, who captured the Group Two Railway Stakes at the Curragh, runaway Listed winner ZOFFANY and the Richard Hannon-trained ZEBEDEE, a recent Sandown Listed scorer who looks set to start a warm order for next week’s Group Three Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, are among the colts to have made their mark in black-type company so far.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
“With the first race in the eight-race £1,750,000 Tattersalls Millions series just over a month away, it is exciting to see the number of top class two-year-olds out there who are graduates of last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 with eight Group/Listed winners already including Memory, the current favourite for next year's 1,000 Guineas.

“The new format for the series, with eight races and entry costs of only £4,000 really hit a chord with owners and it was very gratifying to see the number of two-year-olds staying in at the latest scratchings stage.

"With Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale starting on 5th October, it is worth noting that five of the eight Group/Listed winners were sold for 72,000 guineas or less, demonstrating that the sale is not only Europe's Premier Yearling Sale but also one that provides great value for money."

Tattersalls July Sale Results Day Two

DRAWING BOARD TOPS SECOND DAY OF TATTERSALLS JULY SALE

The Kevin Ryan trained DRAWING BOARD was the star attraction on the second day of the Tattersalls July Sale, selling for 115,000 guineas on a day when 149 lots were sold for 1,665,400 guineas at an average of 11,177 guineas and a median of 6,000 guineas.

DRAWING BOARD was consigned to the Tattersalls July Sale with a ‘Timeform’ rating of 95p following two wins and second from his only three starts, and attracted bids from the Qatari based Ibrahim Al-Malki, Kern Lillingston’s Alistair Donald and a Greek agent, bidding on behalf of a Russian client. However, the trio were usurped by the Bahrain-based pair of Jalil Al Mallah and Ramzi Hassan who secured the two-year-old son of PASTORAL PURSUITS for 115,000 guineas in what was a cosmopolitan affair fitting of the July Sale audience. Mallah and Hussain indicated that DRAWING BOARD was purchased on behalf of Qatari businessman Mubarak Al Noimi and would remain in training in England with Kevin Ryan for the time being before a possible transfer to the Middle East later in the year.

The Listed placed MOMENT OF WEAKNESS was a late addition to the Tattersalls July Sale catalogue and the son of BIG BAD BOB was knocked down to Californian based agent Jamie Lloyd for 100,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of BBA Ireland’s Michael Donohoe. Lloyd purchased the gelding, who was rated 96 by ‘Timeform’, on behalf of Florida based investment banker Tony Grey who had been celebrating the win of his homebred filly Franny Freud who won the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes at Belmont on the weekend.

Early in the day the aforementioned Ibrahim Al-Malki secured the Denis Quinn trained CAPTAIN COKE for 80,000 guineas after seeing off the efforts of agent Geoffrey Howson. Working with former trainer Conrad Allen who had spent the last couple of years in Qatar working as a handicapper, as well as breeze up specialist Armando Duarte, Al-Malki secured the three-year-old colt on behalf of a Qatari based owner and indicated that the son of FATH would remain in the UK for the time being before a possible transfer later in the year.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues at 10am on Wednesday, July 8.

Tattersalls July Sale News

MOMENT OF WEAKNESS ADDED TO TATTERSALLS JULY SALE

The two-time winner and Listed placed MOMENT OF WEAKNESS is a late addition to the Tattersalls July Sale to be held from July 6 – 9. The two-year-old son of BIG BAD BOB out of the NIGHT SHIFT mare KRISTAL’S DREAM was second on his most recent engagement to CLONDINNERY in the Listed Galtee Rochestown Stakes at Cork, with the winner franking that form with an excellent short head and neck third behind FORMOSINA in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Owned by Johnny Harrington and trained by his wife Jessica, MOMENT OF WEAKNESS is rated 96 by ‘Timeform’ which makes him the highest rated two-year-old in the July Sale and one of the top ten two-year-olds in Ireland, by ‘Timeform’ rating.

Bred by Mrs Cristina Patino’s Windflower Overseas Holdings, MOMENT OF WEAKNESS is from the second crop of BIG BAD BOB, a Group 3 winner raced by Mrs Patino who has made a very promising start to his stud career. In fact 2010 has been a remarkable year for Mrs Patino, with her homebred filly SNOW FAIRY successful in the Group 1 Oaks, and ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL, also a homebred, winning the Group 3 Craven Stakes before finishing fifth in the 2000 Guineas.

MOMENT OF WEAKNESS is catalogued as lot 437A in the July Sale which can be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com. Catalogues are out now and available from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives.

Magic Millions National Sale Total Gross Up 42 Percent As National Sale Concludes

TOTAL GROSS UP 42 PER CENT AS NATIONAL SALE CONCLUDES

Almost $700,000 was traded on the final day of the Magic Millions National Sale at the Gold Coast today, bringing to an end the record breaking event.
The final session of the National Yearling Sale grossed over $319,000 on 72 lots sold - while the National Racehorse Sale brought in another $380,000 on 40 sales.

With the $699,200 from today added to the previous sessions of the National Sale, the total gross for the auction rounded out at $48,751,300.

This is over $14.2 million higher on last year's sale gross of $34,524,100.

The top price during the third session of the National Yearling Sale was $25,000 by Matthew Dunn for a cracking Half Hennessy colt from Caminha.

As expected international Group One performer Dao Dao topped the National Racehorse Sale when selling to Melbourne bloodstock agent David O'Callaghan for $90,000.

Other lots popular during the Racehorse Sale included Sequalo Revenge ($37,000 to Edward O'Dwyer) and Mazuka ($36,000 to Tom Hedley).

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester was delighted to learn that gross receipts from the National Sale reached over $48.75 million.

"The total gross for the sale is up over 41 per cent - that is a great result," Chester reported.

"The sale came at a time when the stock market had taken a hit and the proposed mining tax was announced by Kevin Rudd."

"Similar lead up style sales around Australasia had been very tough and we were expecting plenty of tough times."

"But it is great to see the sale has exceeded the expectations of many - including mine."

Chester said attracting the best ever catalogues and then buying benches to the sale was the winning recipe.

"We had great support from vendors around the country and overseas who entered some great prospects."

"And then we were thrilled to host so many buyers from around Australia and particularly overseas who competed for their desired lots."

The National Sale action will swing over the road tomorrow to the Gold Coast Turf Club for the running of the $100,000 Magic Millions National Plate (1200m).

A capacity field will line up in the feature race for two-year-olds.

Magic Millions Major Increases on Day One of National Yearling Sale

Strong selling and an outstanding international buying bench helped return increased figures across the board at the first session of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast today.
Over $5.1 million was traded on 137 lots today at an average price of over $32,000 - the clearance rate was 73.3 per cent.

The gross was up 100% on last year's figures - the average price also up an impressive 42.3% on the corresponding opening session last year.

The top price was $400,000 given by Hong Kong based Richard Hui for a three-year-old brother by Fastnet Rock to Sydney stakes winner The Mikado.

International buyers signed for the top six priced lots with Hong Kong and South African buyers amongst the day's biggest buyers.

Twelve lots today sold for at least $100,000 - a record number for any session in the history of the National Yearling Sale.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said he was pleased with the way the yearling sale had started and looked forward to the strong growth to continue tomorrow.

"It is great to see the figures rise so much for the gross and average and it is pleasing to see the clearance rate higher than day one last year."

"Last year our second session was extremely strong as buyers realised the value that was on offer - so hopefully we can continue the momentum."

"We have got a record international buying bench on hand - dozens of trainers from Hong Kong and Singapore for example and buyers from New Zealand, Ireland, Korea, Libya, Iran and the Philippines.

Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale

MAGIC MILLIONS - STAKES MARES HIGHLIGHT THIRD MARES SESSION

The opening section of the 2010 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale came to a close on the Gold Coast today when the third session was held at the famous Bundall complex.
With more good trade today, the sale gross soared to $22.97 million - up over $3.5 million on last year's figures.

The sale average rounded out at $51,968 - shy of last year's $56,191 - but that figure was bolstered with the $3 million Magic Millions record sale of Princess Coup.

No lots today were able to compete with the two top priced lots of the previous two days with the feature mare today, Phelan Ready's dam Nancy Eleanor failing to reach her million dollar reserve.

The top price during today's session was $290,000 for Alverta's stakes performed full sister Alverta who was sold in foal to Choisir.

The daughter of Flying Spur was snapped up by leading Sydney based bloodstock agent Vin Cox.

Group One winning mare Victory Vein, in foal to More Than Ready, was purchased for $280,000 by the team from Patinack Farm.

Another stakes winning mare Single Rose, a daughter of Irgun in foal to Flying Spur, also proved popular and was another purchased by Vin Cox - this time for $270,000.

Libya's Al Shaab Stud was again extremely active during the third session and came to the fore at the conclusion of the session when they purchased three of the four stallion prospects sold.

"Selling was tough again today - the clearance rate slipped from the first session when it was 86 per cent - but all in all to finish up with the figures we have - we're pretty happy."

"Similar sales have been very tough around the region in recent times - but thankfully we worked hard attracting clients who helped compete for those lots who were less commercial to locals."

"It was great to have clients from New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa and the Philippines back at the Gold Coast and also to have clients from Libya for the first time."

The fourth and final session of the National Broodmare Sale (Session Seven of the National Sale series) will be held from 10am (Qld time) tomorrow.

The action will then switch to the National Yearling Sale with the first of three sessions to be held from Sunday.

Following the third session of the Yearling Sale on Tuesday - the National Racehorse Sale will take centre stage.

MAGIC MILLIONS - STARCRAFT COLT STARS ON GOLD COAST

Records tumbled across the board as the Session 1-2 section of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale was completed at the Gold Coast today.
With the general session of the auction to be held tomorrow, gross receipts for the sale soared past $13.8 million.

Strong selling continued at the Magic Millions complex again today with spirited bidding from the powerful local, interstate and international buying bench.

A cracking colt by Star Witness' sire Starcraft topped the second session when knocked down to Matamata horsewoman Kylie Fawcett for $180,000.

Fawcett, buying under her Oxford Thoroughbreds banner, said the Kulani Park colt was an attractive youngster who looked a likely type.

"I purchased him for good clients Jim Marks and Kevin Algie," Fawcett commented. "He will head back to New Zealand and be raced by them."

Marks, a well known and respected veterinarian in the Matamata region, was delighted to be able to secure the youngster.

"He's got beautiful conformation and a very good temperament," Marks said. "We look forward to getting him over home and let him grow out."

"He looks a really nice prospect - a real Derby prospect."

Fawcett, like Marks, is a big fan of exciting young sire Starcraft - a horse remembered fondly for his racing exploits particularly in New Zealand and Australia.

"He's got some great young horses here and in New Zealand," she said. "Let's hope this is one of the next ones!"

New Zealanders were again extremely active - signing for dozens of youngsters across all levels of the market.

This was clearly evidenced when the last offering of the session - a Dylan Thomas colt from Chetwynd South - was sold for $135,000 after a bidding duel between New Zealanders.

The second top price of the day was $170,000 for a Shamardal full brother to Mundi Gully snapped up by the team from Patinack Farm.

"He was a stand out youngster and had a lot going for him," Patinack's Rick Connolly said. "We've had a lot of success with the Shamardals."

"We're really looking forward to getting him home and then getting him ready to join the racing stable later on," he added.

When the final weanling was sold late today over $13.8 million was traded on 368 youngsters at the impressive average price of $37,563.

The sale aggregate soared 67 per cent on last year's figure when a bigger catalogue was assembled and offered.

The average price over the past two days was $37,563 - over 68 per cent higher than last year's figure of $22,310.

"It's been a great start to the National Sale," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester reported. "Let's hope it continues over the next two weeks."

"Studs who offered quality individuals were rewarded with high prices and they were delighted with the results."

"The clearance rate was outstanding and the competition was red hot."

One stud who featured prominently on the leaderboard today was Rothwell Park. They had 10 of the top 17 prices for the day.

No fewer than 37 youngsters sold for $100,000 or more over the past two days.

The popular third session of the sale will be held at the Gold Coast from 10am (Qld time) tomorrow.

The attention will then swing to the National Broodmare Sale which commences on Sunday.

MAGIC MILLIONS - GROSS SOARS 93% ON DAY ONE AT GOLD COAST

The 2010 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale has made an outstanding start with increases across the board during today's first session at the Gold Coast.
Highlighted by the sale of a lovely Encosta de Lago colt for $300,000, the session saw last year's figures for the corresponding session smashed in what was an outstanding day's selling.

The average price of over $37,000 was up almost 50 per cent on the corresponding session last year - while the day's gross of over $7.74 million was up a staggering 93 per cent.

A large an active buying bench from every state of Australia as well as overseas was on hand to compete for the outstanding selection of youngsters.

The top price for the day was $300,000 given by a Magic Millions client for the Encosta de Lago colt from Group Two winning mare Sharp.

The brown colt, catalogued as lot number 117, was consigned by Bylong Park Thoroughbreds and was one of a number of weanlings from that draft to feature on the top sellers list.

Bylong Park's General Manager David Burke wasn't surprised the Sharp colt had topped the day's proceedings.

"He's by a champion sire and from a former top class mare trained by John Hawkes," Burke commented.
"He is probably the horse of the sale - he's a beautiful mover who is going to make up well later on."
Burke said the team from Bylong Park were pleased with the way their weanlings were being receiving at the auction.

"We decided a while back to offer them as weanlings and we're glad they have attracted such strong interest," he summed up.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester was delighted with the proceedings of the first session and was looking forward to tomorrow's second session.
"We had some lovely weanlings go under the hammer today and they attracted plenty of bids."
"To have the clearance rate at almost 90 per cent in this climate is pretty extraordinary."
"So many of the weanlings on offer exceeded their reserves by large amounts."
"We've put a lot of time and effort in attracting a quality catalogue and then getting as many potential buyers to come along and compete for them."

The second session of the sale will commence at 10am (Qld time) tomorrow.

MAGIC MILLIONS - STRATHEDEN WEANLING DISPERSAL A GREAT SUCCESS

Almost $1 million was traded during the dispersal sale of Stratheden Stud during today's first session of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale at the Gold Coast.

Described as a "great success" by the stud's Judy Marheine, the Stratheden draft attracted plenty of spirited bidding and the lots are headed right around Australia and overseas.

The dispersal was highlighted by the $170,000 given by New Zealand's Curraghmore Stud for a lovely Fastnet Rock colt (ex Tivoli Dancer).

Two other weanlings - a Lonhro filly (to Paul Willetts) and a More Than Ready filly (to Graeme Gathercole) - both sold for $150,000.

"We made a commercial decision to sell the horses as weanlings," Judy said. "We thought the time was right."
"We are very happy with the results achieved and it looks like we had a great spread of buyers," she added.
"Before the sale we sat down and looked at what we might achieve with a good sale - and we did that for sure."

All 19 weanlings offered by Stratheden were sold - at an average price of over $50,000.

The Stratheden Stud dispersal will continue at next week's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The first session of the National Weanling Sale continues.

TATTERSALLS PRESS RELEASE

INDIA LIFTS ITS TRADE RESTRICTIONS ON IMPORTATION OF THOROUGHBRED BREEDING STOCK FROM GREAT BRITAIN

Following extensive lobbying, led by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, the restrictions on the importation of Thoroughbred breeding stock to India from Great Britain have been lifted. An official announcement regarding the new import protocol was published in the latest edition of the Indian Government Gazette.

TBA Chairman Kirsten Rausing said;
“The TBA has been working to secure the movement of horses since the restriction was imposed in 1995. This has been a long campaign, but one which stepped up a gear last year. Whilst it was unfortunate that we were unable to welcome Indian buyers to the 2009 Tattersalls December Sales, we now look forward to their return to British sales later this year.

"This campaign would not have succeeded without support from our opposite numbers, the National Horse Breeding Society of India, the excellent advice and support of the veterinary profession and DEFRA, who through Dr. Mauricio Lopez, Veterinary Head Global Animal Health, represented the Industry at high level meetings in Delhi, supported by the British Trade Office in India.

We also have to recognise the contribution made by a number of supporters, whose close contacts with India provided the necessary guidance and advice, local MP’s and MEP’s who also supported our intensive lobbying.”

The implications for British breeders and sales consignors are significant. In 2009 Indian purchasers accounted for 79 mares at a value of Euros 1.7 million. This is a strong indication of the growing importance of the Indian Thoroughbred Industry. The TBA’s success comes at a time when there is an interest in our high quality British bloodstock, and the Industry needs to maximise the opportunities for international trade.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
“This is wonderful news for the British thoroughbred industry and a tribute to years of collective lobbying and hard work. Particular thanks should go to TBA Chairman Kirsten Rausing who has worked tirelessly to achieve this breakthrough. Historically the December Sales have been a very happy hunting ground for Indian breeders and on behalf of all our vendors we look forward to welcoming them back to Tattersalls this year.”

TBA Chief Executive Louise Kemble said;
“In securing this fantastic result the TBA is able to demonstrate to its members, and the wider bloodstock community, the importance of a well funded and active Association, that is focussed on securing benefits for the Industry at every level. The TBA is fully motivated to act on these issues and, supported by the Industry and Government, it has secured a significant financial benefit for breeders operating at all levels within the Industry.”

The trade restriction was invoked in 1997 as a result of a CEM outbreak in the United Kingdom. Whilst the disease has been eradicated in the UK, isolated cases have been detected in non-Thoroughbred horses, usually entering the UK from mainland Europe, many of which are detected whilst in quarantine for onward shipment.
The important role played by the veterinary profession in clarifying the distinction between Thoroughbred and non-TB trade, the value of the HBLB Codes of Practice for CEM, whose compliance is of the highest standards within the British Thoroughbred Industry, was pivotal in persuading the Indian authorities to lift the import restriction.

Notes for Editors:
Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) is caused by the organism Taylorella equigenitalis. It occurs widely in the non-Thoroughbred population and to a limited extent in Thoroughbreds in mainland Europe. In the UK isolation of the CEM organism is notifiable by law. This is a statutory requirement under the Infectious Diseases of Horses Order 1987. Full details on the disease, clinical signs, prevention, diagnosis and control are contained in the Horserace Betting Levy Board Codes of Practice 2010 available on their website www.hblb.org.uk

The Indian Government has amended their import conditions to allow the import of breeding horses from countries where CEM has been detected within 3 years prior to export. They now require at least 3 years absence in the premises of origin and tested pre-export by culture. DEFRA will amend their current corresponding certificate to include the new clause for breeding horses so it can be formally agreed with India and released for use in the near future.

Magic Millions National Sale News

MAGIC MILLIONS - WELL BRED WINNER TO GO UNDER THE HAMMER

Wednesday's impressive Sunshine Coast winner Star Cure will go under the hammer at next month's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

A member of the powerful Bryan Guy stable, Star Cure made strong late ground late in the 1400 metres race to get up and score a thrilling victory.

The lightly raced three-year-old filly is catalogued as lot number 1182 and is a member of the Royston Stud draft.

The Mossman filly is a beautifully bred prospect at the sale. She is a three quarter sister to outstanding group winners Pure Energy and Segments.

Pure Energy, a three time winner at two, won the Reisling Slipper Trial and was second in a Golden Slipper.

Her full sister Segments won the Group Two Schillaci Stakes and was second in a Group One Oakleigh Plate.

Pure Energy has produced a colt by Redoute's Choice and is believed to be in foal to star international sire Street Cry.

Meanwhile Segments is the dam of three foals - by Encosta de Lago, Flying Spur and Bernardini.

The National Broodmare Sale will be held at the Gold Coast from May 30 to June 2.

The selling extravaganza commences at the Magic Millions complex on Wednesday (May 26) with the first session of the National Weanling Sale.

The National Sale continues with the popular yearling sale - where 16 youngsters by Mossman are set to go under the hammer.

Magic Millions News - International Star to Sell on Gold Coast

INTERNATIONAL STAR TO SELL ON GOLD COAST

One of the region's best and most versatile gallopers Dao Dao will be a drawcard lot at the Magic Millions National Racehorse Sale on June 8.

The lightly raced six-year-old will go under the hammer at the sale and provide buyers with a unique opportunity to purchase one of the most talented horses to have raced in Australia and Hong Kong.

An earner of over A$1.12 million, Dao Dao boasts an imposing race record of seven wins and eight placings from just 19 starts.

He kicked away his career in Australia and notched two wins and a second from three Sydney runs prior to being sent to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Dao Dao proved himself a star where he's been a multiple Class One winner and went within a head of a famous victory in the Champions Mile last year.

In that HK$12 million race Dao Dao beat star Hong Kong galloper Dao Dao when he ran third to Sight Winner and Egyptian Ra.

In Australia during 2010 Dao Dao was second in the Expressway Stakes (beaten a long head by Rangirangdoo), second in a Futurity Stakes (to Typhoon Tracy), third in a Blamey Stakes and second in a George Ryder Stakes.

The son of Shinko Forest raced most recently in the 2010 edition of the Champions Mile and nothing went to plan with him finishing out of a place in a quality field.

A winner of three races at 1400 metres and four at a mile, Dao Dao has won first up and second up and won on good, dead and heavy tracks.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester is currently in Hong Kong and met with the owner taking the entry for the high class performer in person.

"Dao Dao would be a drawcard at any auction anywhere in the world - he has form around the best horses in the region's he has raced - always racing at the top level."

"He's the type of horse who would be invited to any of the international races in Dubai, Hong Kong, England and Singapore," Chester said.

"He's very lightly raced and is a sound, tough horse and will be sold with a full set of x-rays. He's a lovely type of horse."

"He's been owned in Hong Kong and has raced with great success there as well as in Australia. But the owner has decided to put him up for sale."

"Arguably he's one of the best racehorses ever to be sold at auction in Australia. He's proven at the highest level internationally and still has a bright future on the track."

The 2010 Magic Millions National Racehorse Sale will be held following the final session of the National Yearling Sale on Tuesday, June 8.

Entries for the National Racehorse Sale will close at noon on Monday (May 17).

The National Sale commences on May 26 with the first session of weanlings to go under the hammer.

Japanese Success for Magic Millions

MAGIC MILLIONS - JAPANESE SUCCESS FOR MAGIC MILLIONS

Craig Williams wasn't the only Aussie in the winner's stall at the famous Tenno Sho meeting at Kyoto in Japan on Sunday.

Jacaranda Terrace, a Redoute's Choice filly bred and sold in Australia, scored an impressive win in the fourth race on the card.

The $700,000 purchase from the draft of Coolmore Stud at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale cruised home under Shinji Fujita to beat the hot favourite Hero by a length and a half.

The Kazuhide Sasada prepared filly is raced by Chizu Yoshida, the wife of Shadai Farm owner Teruya Yoshida.

Jacaranda Terrace caught the eyes of the Yoshidas who were at the time attending their first ever horse sale in Australia.

Sent to Japan, the filly immediately showed she had above average ability and on Sunday at just her second start she broke through in the ¥9,550,000 (A$111,350) event.

She led throughout in the three-year-old event over 1600 metres - a great achievement with her being the only Southern Hemisphere bred in the race and giving age to her rivals.

Jacaranda Terrace, by Arrowfield Stud's champion sire Redoute's Choice, is from the former outstanding racemare Unearthly.

A daughter of Zabeel, Unearthly scored her most famous win in the Group One Flight Stakes at Randwick for David Payne.

She also won a Group Two Chelmsford Stakes and was second in a Group Two Tea Rose Stakes.

Unearthly is a daughter of the stakes winning Snippets mare Snippets' Crown and hails from the family of Australian Group One winners Innocent King, Our Planet and Ideal Planet.

Jacaranda Terrace wasn't the only Aussie bred racing with great distinction over the weekend in Japan.

On Sunday at Niigata the classy galloper Oceania Boss (Red Ransom-Touched by God by Sunday Silence) ran a half length second in the listed Tanigawadake Stakes (1600m).

A graduate of the Strawberry Hill Stud, Oceania Boss was purchased from the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $250,000.

Oceania Boss, who's won of placed in 16 of his 20 lifetime starts, has earned the equivalent of A$1,352,237.

Raced by Masaji Kitagawa's Grand Prix Co. Ltd stable, Oceania Boss is trained by Yoshito Yahagi and was ridden on Sunday by Hayato Yoshida.

Magic Millions Unbeaten Buffering a QTIS 600 Star

MAGIC MILLIONS - UNBEATEN BUFFERING A QTIS 600 STAR

Mossman juvenile Buffering sent his earnings soaring over $300,000 when he thumped his rivals in today's $150,000 QTIS 600 Plate (1100m) at Ipswich.

In winning and delighted favourite punters, Buffering was able to extend his unbeaten run to four.

The Rob Heathcote trained two-year-old is turning out a great advertisement for the success of the Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale.

Leading New Zealand based bloodstock agent Paul Willetts purchased Buffering as a yearling for Heathcote for just $22,000 at the inaugural QTIS 600 sale last year.

He was bred and sold at the sale by leading Queensland thoroughbred nursery, Racetree.

In less than six weeks Buffering has gone from unraced, to a four time winner and earner of $319,500.

The exciting unbeaten youngster is the third winner from three to race for his dam, the Sydney winner Action Annie.

A daughter of Anabaa, Action Annie is a half sister to 12 winners including the international stakes performers Instant Strike and Don't Go Crazy.

Further back it is the same family as outstanding overseas group winners Relaxed Gesture, Martha Stevens, Evolving Tactics, Wait Till Monday and Token Gesture.

Buffering is by Vinery Stud's leading Success Express sire Mossman - a former top class racehorse who's now one of the most popular in the land.

It seems only a matter of time before Buffering joins the likes of Our Sweet Moss, Segments, Pure Energy, Stirling Grove, Neeson, Love Conquers All, Mosstang and Prince Braeman as one of his stakes winning progeny.
Mossman is well represented in the upcoming Magic Millions National Sale at the Gold Coast.

He has four youngsters - a colt and three fillies - set to go under the hammer at the National Weanling Sale.

The action will hot up during the National Yearling Sale with 16 lots by Mossman up for grabs.

And 10 lots in the National Broodmare Sale head to the sale after being served by the sire last spring.

$15K BASINGALL FILLY HIGHLIGHTS AUTUMN VALUE

The value buying to be had at the Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale at Oaklands was underlined at Seymour today, with $15,000 purchase Jill’s Angel taking out the $100,000 Inglis Autumn Plate.

JILL’S ANGEL ($15,000 2009 Autumn, 2f Invincible Spirit-Ithica) was sold to trainer Peter Morgan by Basinghall Farm and has been a beneficiary of the Inglis Race Series in both starts to date.

On debut last October, she ran third in the $250,000 Inglis Juvenile at Moonee Valley and her earnings now top $80,000 from just two starts.

Today’s runner-up, Reallen, also wiped out her purchase price with today’s placing.

Jill's Angel's added to the recent success for Tas Reilly's Nagambie based Basinghall Farm, who also sold Saturday's AJC G1 The Galaxy winner Ortensia through the Oakland's ring.

Bassinghall Farm will offer seven yearlings in this year's Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale commencing this Thursday.

“It is a consistent theme with this sale that buyers secure great value for money,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“This season we have seen stakes winners like She’s Got Gears ($45,000), Periduki ($4,000) and Orbit Express (P$18,500) underline how you can walk away with a quality yearling at this sale without spending a fortune.

“The unbeaten Our Baby Bonus ($42,500) is another, while recent Group 1 winners like Pompeii Ruler, Grand Journey and Lazer Sharp could each have been purchased for less than $20,000 out of this sale.”

The 2010 Autumn Yearling Sale will be held at Oaklands this week over two days, Thursday April 22 and Friday April 23 with 505 lots catalogued.

This week’s sale has received some important updates since the catalogue went to press, with close relations to recent Group 1 winners like Ortensia, Sacred Kingdom and Crystal Lily.

Lot 36 is a Commands colt from a half sister to Aerate's Pick, dam of Saturday’s G1 Galaxy winner Ortensia.

Lot 81 is a Hussonet half-brother to the dam of Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes winner Brightexpectations.

Lot 244 is a Kempinsky colt from a half sister to Songfest – the dam of budding Singapore Champion Better Than Ever, who added another Group 2 success to his record at the weekend.

Lot 310 , a Delago Brom filly, is the fifth foal from a half sister to Sacred Kingdom, who has won the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize since the catalogue went to print.

Lot 388 a Fomalhaut colt from a half sister to Crystal Snip, dam of G1 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily.

Lot 416 (by Tiger Hill) is the first foal from a sister of Descendant, dam of G3 winner Patronyme.

This week’s sale will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live, with Online Bidding and Make an Offer services for those unable to attend.

MAGIC MILLIONS - KAVANAGH STAR CATAPULTED TO GOODWOOD FAVOURITISM

Winner: Catapulted (Catbird-Siren Miss)
Race: SAJC DC McKay Stakes G3 (1100m)
Sold for: $90,000
Sale: 2007 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale
Vendor: Mill Park (As Agent)
Buyer: Mark Kavanagh
Earnings: $224,425
Owner(s): I Kavanagh, A Taylor, G Small, J Purdey, D Moriarty, WTR Syndicate (Mgr: P Gunner), W Glynn, J Gitsham & J Dollman
Trainer: Mark Kavanagh (Morphettville)

Catapulted burst to outright favouritism for the Group One The Goodwood with a dominant victory in the Group Three DC McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville yesterday.
A member of the all conquering Mark Kavanagh stable, Catapulted was sent out the favourite and had his supporters cheering when he raced clear in the straight for the easiest of wins.

It was just what the connections of the four-year-old wanted to see in the lead up to South Australia's premier sprint early next month.

Stable foreman Sam Kavanagh was delighted with the performance and suggested the gelded son of Catbird.

"His work in the lead up to the race had been very good and it was good to see him go out and win like that," Kavanagh said.

"He has pulled up well so he looks well and truly on track for the Goodwood," he added.

"There's still some good improvement in him - I would have thought he was about 80 per cent yesterday."

At the post Catapulted ($2.40 fav) held a widening two and a half length margin over Solchow ($6), while Augusta Proud ($4.60) was another two and three quarter lengths back in third place.

Catapulted, by the Watson family's Mill Park in partnership with good friends Bob and Helen Dinham, was purchased by Mark Kavanagh for $90,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

Kavanagh has had great success with Mill Park graduates from the Adelaide Sale - with stable stars Divine Madonna, Devil Moon and Undoubtedly all fitting the bill.

His latest group winner Catapulted is by Catbird and from the well related and once winning Umatilla mare Siren Miss.

Successful at 1400 metres, Siren Miss is a full sister to the stakes winning juvenile Umatune - the dam of Magic Millions Perth Classic winner Jestatune.

Umatune is also the dam of the Western Australian Guineas placegetter Saxon Palace.

Interestingly Catapulted's third and fourth dams - Neptune Princess and Lady Freux both won the Group Two SAJC Bloodhorse Breeders' Stakes at Morphettville.

Catapulted boasts an outstanding record of seven wins from just 11 starts with earnings of over $223,000.

Interestingly when Catapulted debuted in Adelaide as a two-year-old with a win he snuck home to beat Super Satin by a nose.

That's the Super Satin who recently reached the pinnacle of racing when he beat a crack field to win the Group One Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin.

Zenyatta Boost For National Sale

MAGIC MILLIONS - ZENYATTA BOOST FOR NATIONAL SALE

Breeders looking to buy into the success story that is Zenyatta - the unbeaten champion of America - need look no further than June's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

On Friday the champion daughter of Street Cry extended her winning streak to 16 with a demolition of her rivals in the $500,000 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park.

Mountcat, a beautifully bred of Mountain Cat, will attract plenty of attention at the famous Gold Coast sales ring when she is offered as part of the Glenmore Park Stud Dispersal Sale.

The French performed mare, who's three runners to date are all multiple winners in France, is a half sister to champion broodmare Vertigineux.

As well as being the dam of triple Group One winner Balance and fellow Oaks winner Where's Bailey, Vertigineux is the dam of the mighty Zenyatta.

And importantly for prospective buyers at the Gold Coast, Mountcat will be offered in foal to Street Sense - a Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup winning son of Zenyatta's sire Street Cry.

"What an incredible opportunity to buy a mare carrying such a close relation to one of the greatest mares the world has ever seen," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester commented.

"You can just imagine what sort of value the resultant foal will have and you could book her straight into Street Cry and produce a three quarter relation to a world champion."

"Opportunities like this don't come up often - but as we've told everybody already - this year's National Broodmare Sale is packed with quality."

"I know we haven't had such an international catalogue before with a number of young stakes winning mares from abroad to go under the hammer."

Chester said the three stakes winning mares in foal to Medaglia d'Oro, the sire of Rachel Alexandra, will also attract plenty of attention.

"We all know Medaglia d'Oro is coming to stand at Darley in the Hunter Valley this spring - but these mares will give Australian breeders a head start with one of the world's hottest sires."

The international stakes winning mares set to go under the hammer in June include Tejano's Oasis, Polynesian Kitty, Celestial Flight, Lady Cat, Loving New, France Soir, Autumn Lodge, Easy Tee, Come Fly Away, Ms Seneca Rock, High and Low, Galateada, Gathering Storm and Folklore.

Strong Finale to Easter Yearling Sale

Latest News ©Sirecam

STRONG FINALE TO EASTER YEARLING SALE

Highlighted by the $1.3M sale of Rich Hill’s Zabeel filly and more strong demand for Session II lots, the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale concluded in Sydney today.

The Zabeel-Gin Player filly brought to four the number of seven figure yearlings sold over the past three days, with Segenhoe Stud’s Redoute’s Choice-Regrowth colt the $1.875million sale topper.

Earlier today, a Fastnet Rock colt from the US-bred Forest Wildcat mare Forest Native, was sold by Luskin Park Stud to De Burgh Equine for $925,000.

The sale gross for Session I cracked the $80million mark late this afternoon, with the clearance rate also reaching 80%. Day One clearance snow sits at 83 per cent, up from 72 percent at the session close.

Today's session Of Easter 1 averaged $241,000 with a healthy median of $200,000.

“ Overall we are down 8% on last year and while it’s not what we might have hoped for, it’s not too bad given we still had an average topping $220,000,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said.

“It’s a sale where you could say buyers won on some lots and vendors won on others, so I think it’s been a fair sale in that regard.

“It’s a totally different mix in terms of the buyer line up for this sale than we had two years ago. Our leading buyer this year spent $4million, but in 2008 we had two buyers spend $40million between them.

“I think it is a challenge for not just Inglis as a sales company, but for the industry as a whole to find new buyers who are prepared to buy at the top end of the market.”

Thanks to fillies like VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume, Easter Session II has quickly garnered a reputation for being a wonderful opportunity to secure high class racehorses at value for money prices.

Buyers once again embraced the concept today, with both the sale gross of $5.924million up 15% on last year and the $77,947 average climbing 18.5% on 2009 figures.

“One positive is the diversity of the buyers and strength of the middle market, which is highlighted by strong sales in the $150,000 to $300,000 bracket and the strength of Session II,” Webster said.

“For Easter II to be up almost 20% on last year is an excellent result and it’s pleasing to see how quickly this new part of the sale has established itself in the marketplace.”

Horses passed in during the sale are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service.

Attention now turns to next week’s Australian Easter Broodmare Sale which begins Tuesday, April 13 and runs through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Top Buyer Turns Top Seller On DAY TWO

TOP BUYER TURNS TOP SELLER ON DAY TWO

James Bester secured the third million dollar yearling of the sale when he landed Kitchwin Hills’ much-admired Redoute’s Choice-Asian Reef colt for $1.2million this afternoon.

The colt (pictured), whose dam has already produced Bon Hoffa and Before Too Long, topped the second session of the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

He is one of 25 yearlings to have cracked the half million dollar mark this week.

For Kitchwin Hills, it was a role reversal, after buying the current sale topping Redoute’s Choice-Regrowth colt for $1.875million yesterday. This is Kitchwin’s first million dollar yearling, improving on the mark of $900,000 for a Redoute’s Choice filly last year.

“This horse has an incredible hind leg action, beautiful floating action in front ... I don’t buy them if they don’t have that. He is as complete a colt as I have seen,” Bester said.

“He has a mother who produced a Group 1 winner and a course record breaking Group 2 winner by a bread and butter sire. What can she do with Redoute’s Choice?

“Kitchwin Hills are fabulous operators. He’s had a great start in life and ticked every single box.”

The sale gross had gone through the $60million mark by this evening, at an average of $222,408 and overall clearance rate of 75%.

Yesterday’s clearance rate had risen to 78% late today and Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster is hopeful of reaching the 80% mark when the sale concludes tomorrow.

“There’s a lot of buyers on the list that haven’t unloaded yet and I would like to think they will spend that money and not go home empty-handed,” Webster said.

“We are seeing a few studs buying and that’s a reflection that they see an opportunity to buy into these nice horses at a time when the market is a little soft.

“In saying that, the sale is still averaging beyond the $220,000 mark, which is very much the top of the tree for yearling sales in this part of the world.”

The sale concludes tomorrow, with selling starting at 11am.
There are another 100 lots to be sold from the first part of the catalogue, before Session II, which comprises Lots 501 to 614, follows.

Horses passed in during the opening two days are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service.

Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale DAY ONE

Latest News ©Sirecam

MARKET STEADY AT NEWMARKET

Opening day figures were slightly up on the corresponding session from 12 months ago during the opening day of the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Segenhoe Stud took the day’s honours of top lot

The average price of $233,182 was up 7% on Day 1 in 2009 as more than $30million was traded on 132 horses today. The clearance rate of 72% late this afternoon was similar to what was recorded last year, with expectation that post-sale purchases will help push the figure to last year’s mark of 79%.

The highest price of the day came for Segenhoe’s Redoute’s Choice colt from the Unbridled’s Song mare Regrowth, which sold to Kitchwin Hills for $1.875million.

Segenhoe Stud’s Michael Sissian said he regarded this colt as the best he has ever offered for sale and this represents a record price for the stud, eclipsing the previous mark of $1.6million.

“He has magnificent presence, a wonderful temperament, terrific action and his physical confirmation is faultless,” Sissian said of the colt.

“A lot of the good judges on the ground tell me he is as close to the faultless yearling as they have seen for many years.”

The colt is a fourth generation product for Sissian and Segenhoe.

“I bred Regrowth, True Blonde (grand dam) and owned Easy Date (great grand dam). That has been my major family for 20 years and it is terrific,” he said.

Kitchwin Hills’ Graeme Brown said the colt was a perfect fit for the direction the stud is heading with its stallions, following the success of Dane Shadow and recent acquisition of Group 1 winner Duporth.

“This is our biggest go. We’re getting a position in the marketplace and this horse fits in well with our situation,” Brown said. “He is a cracking sort and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

Earlier, Makybe Diva’s Fusaichi Pegasus filly sold to Mark Kavanagh for $1.2million, with the Melbourne Cup winning trainer declaring he was “excited” to have bought into the family of a legend of the turf.

The top priced pair led a total of 13 horses to sell for $500,000 or more during the session.

Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster described the opening session as “solid enough”.

“Any horse sale that averages $230,000 is a very good result,” Webster said.

“It’s hard to expect this sale to make the same gains as some others have this year, because Easter is coming off a much higher base, so it’s hard to get the same kind of lift.

“Obviously we would like to see the clearance rate improve and history says that is likely to be the case as we go on this week. It will just take vendors a little time to adjust.

“The main message is that these are the best yearlings in the southern hemisphere and buyers are in pole position to take advantage of what our vendors have to offer over the remaining two days.”

Hawkes Racing led the buying bench today, securing four yearlings for $2.36million, headed by the Encosta De Lago-Shania Dane colt.

Coolmore Stud was the leading vendor by aggregate during the first session, while Makybe topped the averages (3 or more sold) from Segenhoe and Willow Park.

Group 1 Inglis Double on Easter Eve

GROUP ONE INGLIS DOUBLE ON EASTER EVE

Faint Perfume highlighted the jewels in next week’s Easter Session II, while Littorio entered the annals of racing’s great bargains in an Inglis Group 1 double at Rosehill today.

Easter II has only been held for the past two years, but its merit was further underlined with a stakes double at Sydney racing’s richest day today.

FAINT PERFUME (P$40,000 2008 Easter II, 3f Shamardal-Zona) confirmed her status as Australia’s best three-year-old staying filly when staging an awesome finishing sprint to reel in Valdemoro to win the Vinery Stud Storm Queen Stakes.

It was the Bart Cummings trained filly’s second Group 1 success and she becomes the fifth VRC Oaks winner in seven years to win this race. Her earnings now top $1.36million with five wins in 10 starts.

Think Big Stud have a Pendragon half-brother to Faint Perfume catalogued as Lot 273 at next week’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Easter II was also in the spotlight earlier in the day when NEESON (P$65,000 2008 Easter II, 3g Mossman-Favorite Actress) won the Listed Darby Munro Stakes. His record now reads out at five wins from 11 starts for earnings topping $300,000.

LITTORIO ($15,000 2006 Premier, 5g Bellotto-Our Centasea) missed last year’s spring carnival, but the Nigel Blackiston trained five-year-old made up for lost time when he stormed home to win the Group 1 BMW (2400m).

Littorio was a Group 1 winner of the Turnbull Stakes last season, but this was a new career peak and his earnings have now reached $2.3million.

Another timely Easter reminder came late in the day when Patinack's emerging stayer COUNT ENCOSTA ($325,000 2008 Easter, 3g Encosta De Lago-Sovereign Countess) made it three on end in outgunning favoured Descarado in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes.
This was the 56th stakes success for Easter graduates in Australia this season.

Coolmore stud will offer a full-sister to Count Encosta as Lot 177 at Easter.

The next chance to secure an Inglis yearling comes up with the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, starting this Tuesday, April 6 and running over three days.

In addition to Faint Perfume and Count Encosta’s siblings, another important update today came from the Group 1 Queen of the Turf, with Montana Flyer running third to Typhoon Tracy.

Torryburn Stud will offer an Al Maher three-quarter-brother as Lot 60 on Tuesday.

Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily’s sire Stratum is represented by six yearlings in the catalogue.

Sirecam videos and photos of yearlings are now online for those unable to attend Newmarket for inspections.

Magic Millions News

MAGIC MILLIONS - KARRAKATTA NEXT FOR UNBEATEN RIOSAND

Winner: Riosand (Fusaichi Pegasus-Lackadaisical)
Race: WATC Perth Stakes LR (1100m)
Sold for: $100,000
Sale: 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
Vendor: Coolmore Stud as agent
Buyer: Beh Chin Pheng
Earnings: $61,950
Owner(s): CP Beh
Trainer: Joe Byrne (Ascot)

Riosand burst into contention for the Karrakatta Plate with an impressive win in the listed Perth Stakes (1100m) at Ascot this afternoon.

Prepared by renowned horseman Joe Byrne, Riosand tracked the leaders before bursting to the lead in the straight and establishing a winning break.

Debutant runner Big Josh, a $5.50 chance, flew home under William Pike to make the finish interesting - but in the end Riosand ($3 fav) still held a long neck margin.

The Pupster ($17) was another two and a quarter lengths back in third place.

Byrne, who prepares the Fusaichi Pegasus gelding for his good friend and major Malaysian owner Mr Beh Chin Pheng, is looking forward to testing him in better grade.

He said Perth's premier juvenile race - the Group Two Karrakatta Plate - would be his next run.

Byrne said he was pretty confident throughout the race - but said the finish got a little tighter than he thought he might.

"He looked the winner a long way from home and I think Troy thought that as well," Byrne commented.

"But we got a bit of a fright."

Connections have always held a good opinion of Riosand - who is yet to taste defeat in either races or trials.
"He's a lovely horse and he's come back here and he's not even blowing," Byrne pointed out.

Winning rider Troy Turner said Riosand had a good run throughout the race and he liked how he accelerated to the front at the top of the straight.

The $500,000 Group Two Karrakatta Plate (1200m) will be run at Ascot in a fortnight - on April 17.

Riosand was purchased by connections for $100,000 from last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud.

He is one of six winners from his dam - the winning and Melbourne placed Star Pyramul mare Lackadaisical.
That makes him a half brother to the listed City of Eira Cup winner Napping - a three time winner and now proven city producer.

Riosand is the 47th individual stakes winner for his sire - the Kentucky Derby Mr. Prospector horse Fusaichi Pegasus.

Proven in both hemispheres, the star Coolmore Stud sire has tasted stakes success in Perth prior to Riosand with Morant and Yuro.

Inglis Easter Yearling Sale

Latest News ©Sirecam

SLIPPER WEEKEND TO HAVE BEARING ON EASTER SALE

With only one week before selling begins at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale , TVN will preview the drafts to be offered at 8:30pm tonight after the Thoroughbreds & Connections shows.

Meanwhile the yearlings have arrived and inspections have begun ahead of next Tuesday’s opening session of the sale.

Not surprisingly, given the correlation between Easter and the very best races, updates to the catalogue have been coming at a rapid rate in recent weeks.

Dubai Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint winner Joy And Fun has a Zabeel half-sister to be offered by Rich Hill catalogued as Lot 448, while Japanese Group 1 winner Kinshasa No Kiseki’s half-sister Feather Duster has a Redoute’s Choice filly as Lot 420. The international winners followed the update for the O’Reilly-Danasia (Lot 369) half-brother to Rosehill Guineas winner Zabrasive last Saturday.

It wouldn’t surprise if the updates continued at Saturday’s bumper Rosehill meeting.

There are catalogue connections in each of the five Group 1 races, highlighted by the Golden Slipper, with David Hayes’ hope Shaaheq having a full-sister catalogued as Lot 366 next week. In all, there are ten siblings in the catalogue to horses nominated for the Group 1 events on Saturday.

Two-time reigning Champion stallion Encosta De Lago is the most represented sire in this year’s catalogue, but the likes of Redoute’s Choice (with runners headed by Easter duo Beneteau and Shaaheq) and Fastnet Rock (Hinchinbrook and Elimbari) could mount a serious challenge to his dominance should they be successful on Saturday.

The Golden Slipper result could easily reshape the General Sires table currently led by Street Cry (Ire).
Should Redoute’s Choice sire his third Golden Slipper winner this year, it would place him in good stead for season honours.

Fastnet Rock is the hot new sire on the block, with 44 Easter yearlings and with the Bart Cummings trained Easter Group 1 star Rock Classic to represent him over the Derby weekend, the Coolmore stallion is not without a hope of becoming the first second crop stallion since Danehill to claim Australia’s Champion Sire crown if either of his runners are successful in the Golden Slipper.

More Than Ready (USA) with 29 Easter yearlings could also stake Champion Sire claims and become only the third sire behind Danehill (USA) and Star Kingdom (Ire) to complete a hat trick of Golden Slipper winners. Star Kingdom went on to sire the first five winners in succession (1957 - 1961), while Danehill with an additional two winners equalled his tally of five (1994 - 96, 1999 & 2001).

For those not able to make it to Newmarket for inspections this week, Sirecam videos and photos of selected lots can be viewed HERE

The sale will be broadcast on TVN & Inglis Sale Day Live, with the Online Bidding and Make an Offer services key features for those not attending.

Magic Millions QTIS sale concludes

STARCRAFT FILLY IS TOPS AS RECORD QTIS SALE CONCLUDES

A filly by Star Witness' sire Starcraft has topped the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale after making $140,000 during today's second and final session.

Leading Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan snapped up the attractive youngster, who was catalogued as lot 241.
"She was one of the fillies of the sale," Ryan reported. "She's by a young stallion who's really doing the job."

"She's a lovely type and has a great pedigree - she has a lot of things going for."

"The way the quality horses have sold this year, she certainly looked good value," he added.

"And with her being QTIS 600 and BOBS she looks the perfect buy for me."

Later in the day top Kelly Schweida went to $110,000 for a colt by Snizel, Jamie Bayliss snapped up a Sequalo colt for $107,500 and Bryan Guy went to $100,000 for a youngster by Hidden Dragon.

The sale boasted record figures across all levels with over $7.66 million traded on 346 yearlings a strong clearance rate of over 82 per cent.

The average price of $22,166 was impressive when compared to the $18,424 achieved at the same sale last year.

"It's been a great couple of day's selling and I'm sure buyers would be thrilled with the value they have achieved," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.

"With such great incentives and bonuses linked to the sale, the buyers will be looking back at this sale as one of the best value ever."

"The Queensland buyers, as you'd expect, were the busiest buyers at the sale - but we had good representation from around Australia and also overseas," Chester added.

Magic Millions - QTIS Sale

SNITZEL COLT TOPS QTIS SALE OPENER

A lovely colt by promising first season sire Snitzel topped proceedings during the first session of the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast today.

The colt, consigned by Glenlogan Park, was snapped up by Dean Watt's Dynamic Syndications operation for $135,000.

"He's a very athletic individual," Watt reported. "He's magnificently bred being a cross that's worked so well."

"Redoute's Choice over Rory's Jester produced Not a Single Doubt and Danehill over Rory's Jester produced our Blue Diamond winner Reward for Effort."

"He's very athletic. A lovely running two-year-old type and is by one of the hottest sires at the moment."
Watt is a fan of the sale and the QTIS 600 bonus scheme.

"Queensland Racing and Magic Millions should be congratulated for this sale and these great incentives," Watt noted.

"I wanted to come to the sale and take him the nicest horse and I've been able to buy him," he summed up.

Two other yearlings today sold for $100,000 - the Show a Heart-Vital Statistics colt and the Sequalo-Beating the Odds colt.

All up $3,654,500 was grossed on 167 yearlings at a healthy average price of $21,883 - up 29 per cent on the same session at the inaugural QTIS 600 Yearling Sale in 2009.

The clearance rate was 80 per cent - up from the 78 per cent achieved on the same day last year.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester was pleased with the proceedings and was looking forward to tomorrow's second session.

"It's been a positive day's selling," Chester said. "And while the figures were up on last year I still think there was outstanding value on offer."

"With $16 million in bonuses and races for graduates of the sale you can see why the complex was full of potential buyers, particularly from Queensland."

"You can see by the prizemoney already won by those horses who lined up in the $250,000 QTIS Plate at the Gold Coast track yesterday how lucrative buying from this sale can be."

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia

BREEDERS CONTRIBUTE $250m ANNUALLY TO AUSTRALIAN RACING INDUSTRY

A report released today by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) reveals that breeders in this country have committed in excess of $500million in the past two years in training fees for racehorses. This figure does not include the purchase price of racehorses and the cost of breaking them in, nor the added expense of vets, farriers and other costs incurred in the upkeep of racehorses.

The report establishes that breeders wholly or partly own 63% of racehorses in training. When you add together all the percentages of racehorses owned by breeders, it equates to owning the equivalent of 45% of all racehorses in Australia.

“The study demonstrates conclusively that breeders largely underwrite racing and make a massive contribution to the income and well-being of industry participants,” TBA president Trevor Lobb said.

“Breeders underpin racehorse ownership in this country and seek to play a constructive role in resolving the many issues affecting the viability and future of racing.”

The report was compiled using figures supplied by the Australian Stud Book and Racing Information Services Australia (RISA).

In real numbers, 7,177 of Australia’s 8,500 thoroughbred breeders share in the ownership of more than 35,000 racehorses.

Breeders also contribute in excess of $10million annually to prizemoney through race sponsorship and state incentive schemes like BOBS, VOBIS and QTIS.

“Breeders are determined to work with other industry participants to support and promote racing in these rapidly changing times,” Mr Lobb said.

“We are all in this together and recognition for the role of breeders as owners and contributors to racing is long overdue,” Mr Lobb said.

QTIS 600 success stories chase more big dollars

MAGIC MILLIONS - QTIS 600 SUCCESS STORIES CHASE MORE BIG DOLLARS

The success of last year's Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale is evidenced through an outstanding line up of juveniles set to contest the $250,000 QTIS 600 2YO Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Scheduled to run on the eve of the 2010 sale, which will be held on Sunday and Monday, the race has attracted 35 entries from around the state.

With the field limited to 16 runners the cut off prizemoney earner at present is Count Spur, a $16,000 earner for the Bryan Guy stable.

Quality Sunshine Coast filly Tough Luck heads the order of entry having earned $271,250 for the Robert Bradshaw stable.

North Queensland youngster Steel Dragon, transferred this week to Magic Millions Classic winning trainer Gillian Heinrich, has earned $163,800.

Alan Bailey's exciting Markane youngster Marking Time is the other six figure earner to date - he's already banked his connections $148,500.

Those three two-year-olds alone could have been purchased at the Magic Millions sales last year for $81,000. As it stands the trio have already earned $583,550.

"The benefit of buying a QTIS 600 Yearling is clearly shown with the field for the race at the Gold Coast on Saturday," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.

"Tough Luck, a $9,000 bargain, has earned $271,250 and she was only purchased a year ago - quite staggering isn't it."

"The QTIS 600 Yearling Sale is the perfect spot for a Queenslander to buy a horse this year."

A number of the leading contenders for Saturday's big race are by Hidden Dragon or Jet Spur - the two hot young freshman sires of Queensland.

No first season sire has been represented by more winners in Australia this season than Jet Spur and he looks set to have three runners in the $250,000 feature.

Hidden Dragon has also made every post a winner this season and Steel Dragon and Hidden Kisses will lead his weekend charge.

The 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale has attracted an outstanding catalogue of 462 lots. View the online catalogue here.

"The average price of a yearling at the sale last year was just $18,424 - this is great value considering the prizemoney and bonuses available for that yearling to compete for later on."

"There is over $16 million in extra prizemoney to be won by horses sold at the sale this week - that is on top of usual stakes."

The sale will kick away at 11am on each day and the sale will be broadcast live via the Magic Millions website.

Those unable to make it to the Gold Coast can get into the action with online bidding available. Click here for more information.

Super Satin Stars in Hong Kong Derby

Latest News ©Sirecam

MAGIC MILLIONS - SUPER SATIN STARS IN HONG KONG DERBY

Winner: Super Satin (Danehill Dancer-Mantles Princess)
Race: HKJC Hong Kong Derby G1 (2000m)
Sold for: $340,000
Sale: 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
Vendor: Baramul Stud
Buyer: Ivan Allan
Earnings: A$1,762,973
Owner(s): Ranjan Tikam Mahtani
Trainer: Caspar Fownes (Hong Kong)

Super Satin confirmed his status as the champion four-year-old of Hong Kong with a stunning win in Sunday's HK$16 million Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin.

Bred and sold by Baramul Stud for $340,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Super Satin was sent out one of the popular elects after a string of excellent efforts.

Ridden back off the speed by champion Hong Kong jockey Douglas Whyte, Super Satin was able to grab the back of former Aussie galloper Fair Trade as he made a run when approaching the turn.

Shortly after straightening for home, Super Satin was switched off the heels of Fair Trade when the run of that charge peaked.

The well bred son of Danehill Dancer was able to steam home and in the shadows of the post get up and beat Super Pistachio by a head.

Highly regarded galloper Brave Kid, the mount of Brett Prebble, was third, a further length back, while Beauty Flash was the best of the unplaced brigade in fourth position.

A one time Adelaide based galloper, Super Satin was purchased as a yearling by former champion Hong Kong trainer Ivan Allan and has been raced throughout his short but illustrious career by Ranjan Mahtani.

The win was the first in the highly decorated career of champion Hong Kong rider Douglas Whyte.

"It's been a long time to wait for this," Whyte said. "The best part of 11 years."
"And then this horse came along and I've stuck with him the whole way and he's really let down and produced the goods on the big day."
"Caspar (Fownes, winning trainer) has done a fantastic job," Whyte added. "He's come a long way."
Whyte said he elected to grab the back of Fair Trade when Shane Dye elected to get moving as the pace slowed in front.
"They really hacked up and I made a do or die decision. Dye did that for me and I got onto his back."
"He was only running 2000 metres for the first time so I had to bide my time and be patient and not hit the front too early," he summed up.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said the Hong Kong Derby result further confirmed the reputation of his company for selling outstanding racehorses.

"For many years Australian owners and trainers have known the value and success of Magic Millions graduates and more recently our international clients have caught on."
"The Hong Kong Derby is one of the best in the world with high class horses recruited from around the world to contest the big race."
"Super Satin was purchased by Ivan Allan and kicked away his career with Phillip Stokes in Adelaide."
On debut the promising then two-year-old was nosed out by subsequent stakes winner Catapulted at Morphettville.

In his two other runs for Stokes, Super Satin was unplaced behind Augusta Proud in the Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic before easily beating Cerberus Gal in a 2YO Maiden at Morphettville.

In recent months Super Satin has confirmed his status as one of the country's best by a string of four wins prior to his last start second in the Group Two Hong Kong Derby Trial.

The 105th individual stakes winner for champion international sire Danehill Dancer, Super Satin is a beautifully bred galloper.

His dam, the British placed Rock City mare Mantles Princess, is a half sister to three stakes by Danehill headed by Group One winners Johan Cruyff and Spartacus.
The truly international family also includes Hollywood Derby winner De La Rose and her Group One winning son and sire Conquistarose.

Bel Esprit Colt Stars As Adelaide Sale Concludes

MAGIC MILLIONS - BEL ESPRIT COLT STARS AS ADELAIDE SALE CONCLUDES

Healthy increases across the board continued at the Magic Millions Sales Complex today as the Adelaide Yearling Sale came to a successful conclusion.

With a strong buying bench of locals, interstaters and even international guests, the sale saw over $1.48 million change hands for 114 yearlings at an impressive average price of $12,987.

The average price for the corresponding session in Adelaide last year was just $5,494.

The clearance rate of 76 per cent rose all through the day and matched yesterday's impressive sale.

Top price today was $77,500 for a Bel Esprit colt given by leading Victorian trainer John Ledger.

Ledger was one of the more active buyers today along with the likes of Aquanita Racing (WA), Washpool Thoroughbreds, Darren Weir, Richard & David Jolly and Lloyd Kennewell.

"The buyers were out in force today at Morphettville and got some great value," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said.

"Quality individuals were well sought out and were the subject of spirited bidding," he added.

"The Adelaide Sale has a proud history and is regarded as one of the best value sales in the Southern Hemisphere."

"It is the sale where buyers can come and buy themselves a racetrack star for a price much lower than elsewhere around the country."

INGLIS Huge Session II Increases as Premier Concludes

HUGE SESSION II INCREASES AS PREMIER CONCLUDES

The upward trend of the 2010 Melbourne Premier Sale continued throughout the final day, with Session II statistics improving a staggering 50% from 12 months ago.

In all, 108 horses sold today for a gross of $3,001,500 – a hefty rise on last year’s figure of $2,009,000.
Today’s average of $27,792 represented a 46.6% increase in the corresponding session from 2009.
Furthermore, 15 horses made $50,000 or higher today (compared to four last year).

It brought to a conclusion this year’s Premier Sale, where more than $31.5million has been traded over the past four days. A number of passed in horses from the first session have since been sold, taking that session’s clearance rate beyond the 80% mark.

“This is a tremendous result and just reward for our vendors who have committed a wonderful team of young horses to this year’s sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“Melbourne graduates have proven themselves to be world class racehorses and I’m certain that buyers from this year’s sale will be reaping those same rewards in the coming seasons.”

Topping the final day was Ultra Thoroughbreds’ Stravinsky colt from the stakes winning mare Radio Sky, which went to Greg Eurell for $120,000. This was significantly higher than the $70,000 that topped last year’s Session II.

Horses passed in during all four days of the sale are still available post sale via the Make an Offer service.

Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale

BIG INCREASES IN TASSIE AS DERBY CONNECTIONS STRIKE

Hobart based thoroughbred owner Paul Geard made his presence felt at today's 2010 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale by purchasing the top two priced lots of the auction.

Early in the sale Geard and his wife Elizabeth paid $67,500 for the Dash for Cash half brother to recent Flemington stakes winner Silver Bullion.

That price held top spot of the day's leaderboard until they went to $90.000 to secure the half brother to recent stakes winning juvenile Radhi Rani.

The colt, catalogued as lot number 153, is by Clangalang - the sire of the Geard's recent Tasmanian Derby winner Geegees Blackflash.

Geegees Blackflash's trainer John Luttrell will train the sale topper.

"We've had some good success in recent weeks with progeny by the sire and this colt was a really nice youngster."

"He's very athletic and looks as though he will grow into a really nice racehorse," Geard added.
"We are hoping he could win a Derby in a couple of years or even win the Magic Millions (2YO Classic) next year."

The Hobart based dairy farmer and his wife are leading owners in Tasmania and have horses with a select group of trainers.

"We have about 23 or 24 in work with a few trainers. This colt will go to John who trained the Derby winner for us."

There were healthy increases across at all levels at the sale with the average price of $14,193 up 44 per cent on last year's auction.

The aggregate of $1,490,250 was up over 66 per cent on the 2009 sale. And the clearance rate was over 70 per cent - last year it was a tick over 63 per cent.
Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester was happy with the final results after a slow start to the auction earlier in the day.

"Things were tough early," Chester said. "But the bidding got stronger as the sale went and the nice horses in the sale certainly had plenty of admirers."

"For the figures to be up significantly across the board is very pleasing," Chester added. "The average is up 44 per cent and the gross over 66 per cent - that is very positive."

There was a large group of buyers from the mainland at the sale and they included Denise Martin (Star Thoroughbreds), Darren Weir, John McArdle (Redgun Racing), Bruce and Jean Purcell, Ken Keys and Bryan Muschialli.

The yearling sale focus now switches to Adelaide - the renowned value sale at Morphettville will be held on March 9 and 10.

"Adelaide is regarded by many as the best value sale in the Southern Hemisphere. It is one of the rare sales in our area where you continually find top class racehorses at bargain prices."
"We are also very much looking forward to our 2010 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast later in March," he added.

And entries remain open for the Southern Hemisphere's number one breeding stock auction - the National Sale - where weanlings, yearlings, race fillies and broodmares will go under the hammer at the Gold Coast.
"Anyone needing information on entries should contact our Bloodstock Department," Chester summed up.

EASTER PAIR STAR IN PRELUDES

Inglis graduates are set to extend their recent Blue Diamond dominance, following the ultra impressive wins by Easter babies Psychologist and Beneteau in the Group 3 Preludes at Caulfield today.

Graduates from each of Inglis' major yearling sales - Easter, Premier and Classic - have won seven of the past 10 Blue Diamonds, with $190,000 Premier youngster Reward For Effort the most recent.

PSYCHOLOGIST ($120,000 2009 Easter II, 2f Choisir-Miss Conception) further highlighted the growing success story of the fledgling Easter Part II sale when scoring a dominant debut win in the G3 Fillies Prelude.

BENETEAU ($1million 2009 Easter, 2c Redoute’s Choice-Slice Of Paradise) then announced himself as the new Diamond favourite when coming from off the speed and unwinding a powerful finish in the G3 Colts & Geldings Prelude.

The Paul Messara trained colt was sold through the Arrowfield Stud draft and snapped up by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds. MAGIC MILLIONS - SUCCESSFUL PERTH SALE COMES TO A CLOSE

The 2010 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale came to a close at Belmont today with healthy increases again across the board.

Astute buyers seeking great value for money were out in force at the sale complex today competing for a lovely line up of prospective gallopers.

All up during the day over $836,000 was traded on 115 yearlings at an average price of $7,274. The clearance rate was a healthy 75 per cent.

The average price was up over 40 per cent on last year's figure and the clearance rate soared from 60 to 75 per cent.

The top price of the day was $34,000 twice - once for a Hartley's Spirit colt to Brent Larsson and the other for a colt by Untouchable to KL Chong. Local buyers were strong today, but were equally matched by buyers from Singapore and Malaysia. Magic Millions' Singapore Manager Wade Burridge bought four yearlings today and was impressed with the stock on offer.

"Over the four sessions Singapore has purchased 26 yearlings.." "Judging by the horses we've bought for Singapore I have no doubt we'll all be back bigger and stronger next year."

The day's leading buyer was champion Malaysian trainer KL Chong - signing for seven yearlings at a spend of $86,000. All up this week he snapped up 17 lots for $603,000.

Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester said the four sessions of the Perth Yearling Sale had proven successful. "This sale is one of the real highlights on the Australian thoroughbred calendar," Chester said. "Those who've never been should make sure they book in for the 2011 sale."

"The line up of yearlings on offer over the four sessions this year was first class and let's not forget recent graduates of the sale include the champion stablemates Scenic Blast and Scenic Shot."

Chester said the focus of Magic Millions and thoroughbred followers would now focus on upcoming auctions at Launceston, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.
"We have catalogues out for all of those three sales and there are some lovely prospects to go under the hammer."

Inglis Easter Catalogue Online Now

Easter 2010 Online

The catalogue for the southern hemisphere’s premier yearling Sale, 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, to be held at Newmarket from April 6-8, is now online.

The catalogue can be viewed HERE

In keeping with the exemplary standard of Easter, the catalogue includes 173 lots from stakes winning dams, including the progeny of 44 Group 1 winners.
There are also 172 siblings to stakes winners, including 51 Group 1 winners.

This year’s sale has received two important high profile inclusions since the Easter Preview was released in December. Tony Santic has opted to sell the great Makybe Diva’s second foal, a filly by Fusaichi Pegasus, while the southern hemiphere's most expensive purchase Milanova will be represented by an Encosta de Lago filly on account of Coolmore Stud.

“Once again we have been fortunate to receive great support from all of Australasia’s leading breeders, with their best horses being aimed at the Easter Sale,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said.
“This year’s catalogue has a good mix of proven top class stallions like Encosta De Lago, Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur, Zabeel and More Than Ready, intertwined with strong drafts from up and comers like Fastnet Rock, Stratum, Lonhro, Snitzel and Starcraft.”
D’Arcy said there will be no shortage of opportunities to secure a quality yearling at a good price this year.
“Given market conditions thus far in 2010, it is reasonable to assume that $80,000 to $150,000 will be able to buy you a top class individual at this year’s sale,” he said.

D’Arcy also pointed to yesterday’s ultra impressive Randwick winner Beneteau, a $1million colt from the 2009 sale, as to the drawcards of shopping in the higher range at Easter.

“He’s an exciting prospect and that is what the top end of Easter is all about,” D’Arcy said. “His owners will be richly rewarded if he can win one of those top autumn two-year-old races.”

Beneteau’s sire Redoute’s Choice has 47 yearlings this year. Encosta De Lago, who provided last year’s $1.8million sale topper, is the most represented sire with 57 yearlings, while fellow Champion Australian sire Flying Spur has 55.

Other sires with big drafts include Fastnet Rock (44), Exceed And Excel (33), More Than Ready (29), and Rock Of Gibraltar (29).

New Zealand legend Zabeel has 14 Easter yearlings this year, while his emerging grandson Lonhro has 13.
Easter II, which has proven a huge hit since its inception two years ago, will have 114 yearlings catalogued. This session has already produced top class graduates like VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume, Lovemelikearock, Run For Naara and emerging Hong Kong griffin Leading City.

“This is without doubt the best group of horses seen in this session and once again we are grateful for the support of our clients,” D’Arcy said.

“This session has averaged $65,000 in the last two years and prospective purchasers with $50,000 to $100,000 to spend should make sure they are here at Newmarket for Easter.”
